Weight Loss, Green Tea Pill or Green Tea Extract: Fact or Fiction

You might have seen a Green tea pill, green tea extract, or even a green tea patch advertised has the magic bullet for weight loss.   But can you really increase metabolism naturally and lose weight with a magic green tea pill?

Research indicates you can increase your metabolism and lose weight if you consume enough green tea, but that is not the whole story.   Most advertising don't tell you the whole truth.  For example,

Research has linked only EGCg ( Epigallocatechin gallate), a green tea catechin with the thermogenic effect.  Brewed green tea contains about 20 mg of EGCg per cup while Chi Green Tea Liquid Extract (claims to be the most concentrated liquid green tea extract) contains about  50 mg/ml of EGCg.  To duplicate conditions associated with the weight loss research requires a daily EGCg intake of about 300 mg/day.  This means you would have to drink 15 cups of green tea, or take 6 ml of green tea extract per day.

The metabolic increase is about a third of the increase in fat oxidation.  To put it another way, research indicates that EGCg will have a bigger effect on your clothing size (tape measure) than on your weight.

Bottom line: If you are interested in Green Tea for weight loss, make sure you check out how much EGCg is in the product you are looking at.
