Weight Loss, Cushing's Syndrome, and Cortisol Blockers: Fact or Fiction?
This flurry of marketing cortisol blockers as weight
loss supplements is the result of a rare condition called Cushing's Disease or
Cushing's Syndrome. People with Cushing's Disease have chronically very
high cortisol levels that stimulate abdominal fat deposits. Anyone with
Cushing's Disease needs a doctor not an herbal nutrition supplement. If your
cortisol levels are high enough to make you fat, you would be sick.
So can a cortisol blocker help you lose weight?
Yes but not the rapid weight loss hyped by some marketers.
This is why Federal Trade Commission has charged marketers of CortiSlim with claiming,
falsely and without substantiation, that their products can cause weight loss.
Relacore has received a warning letter from the FDA related to their
unsubstantiated weight loss claims.
Cortisol blockers can aid weight loss by two mechanisms.
 | Reduce (or possibly eliminate) stress-induced eating. High cortisol levels can trigger
stress-eating which can result in stress-related weight gain. Lowering
cortisol can help you control over-eating and consequently eliminate
stress-related weight gain.
 | Researchers have shown that levels of cortisol and leptin (the
appetite-controlling hormone) are related to each other.
In other words, when cortisol decreases, leptin decreases and when cortisol
rises, leptin rises. |
 | Other research has shown that binge eaters have higher cortisol levels
than non-binge eaters. |

 | Cortisol is a catabolic hormone. Catabolic hormones stimulate the
breakdown of muscle tissue. |
 | Loss of muscle tissue results in lowering metabolic rate and making
weight loss more difficult. |

In addition, Ashwagandha (Corti+ contains an
optimized patented Ashwagandha extract) can also assist with weight loss by
 | Helping maintain blood sugar levels
affected by stress
 |
Chronically high blood sugar
levels are the
enemy of dieters. Chronically high blood sugar levels can result in
insulin resistance or the gradual loss of sensitivity to insulin by many
tissue cells. Insulin "opens the door" to cells, allowing glucose to
enter the cells where it can be burned. Glucose that can not be be
burned is stored as fat. |

 | Supporting Healthy Thyroid function.
Stress is a major factor that blocks the conversion of T4 to T3 (T3 and
T4 are hormones controlled by the thyroid gland)
 | Research has
linked increasing T3 hormone levels with weight loss. |
 | A 2001 study showed that ashwagandha can raise both T3 and T4 levels.
